have been camped out in front of the supreme court building since thursday. they are hoping to get one of the 150 seats set aside for the public. across the country emotions are strong on both sides of the issue. there is not any place in the constitution that allows for a different set overrulings for a different -- set of rules for a different class of people. >> i don't think the majority of justices will want to launch another culture war and will respect the right of voters to decide. >> the supreme court is not expected to issue a ruling on the same sex marriage cases until june. here's a break down of what will happen. if the court strikes down prop 8 as a violation of constitutional rights, same sex marriage would become legal nation-wide or the court would support prop 8. a third option

gruesome died thursday. he is a graduate of hayward mt. eden high school and earned an associate degree from the art institute of san francisco. he is survived by his wife, parents, and sister. happening right now secretary of state john kerry is making a surprise visit to afghanistan. he arrived a short time sag for an unannounced visit with president hamid karzai. he is concerned he may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremists. the transfer ceremony was originally scheduled to take place two weeks ago during chuck hagel's first visit. but negotiations broke down whether the u.s. would have the power to block the release of some detainees. an agreement reached over the weekend will give them the power to veto the release of the prisoners. the 449 million project

took about seven years to finish. the tunnels along highway 1 and pacifica and half-moon bay are the first to be built in california in 50 years. it will allow drivers to avoid that section of highway that is known for landslides. crews are getting ready for the big electronic toll switch. crews will hang an electronic sign at the toll plaza today. and early wednesday morning the sign will be turned on and drivers will no longer stop. during the first days of that all electronic toll taking there will be bridge employees to wave through the traffic. >> huge change. hopefully not any big changes this morning. yeah we don't want any surprises brian or pam. right now things look pretty good around the bay area. good morning, to you. let's go outside scene take a look at 80 westbound. you can see traffic is moving along pretty well as you drive

good morning. a lot of high clouds and patchy low clouds but mostly sunny today to partly sunny. 50s and 60s or low 70s. italian supreme court is set to rule on whether american college student amanda knox should be retried. if the court decides today that knox's acquittal can be overturned than the case will be officially over. the city of stockton is taking its bankruptcy case to federal court if if the court finds the city has done everything possible to pay its debts, stockton will become the largest city in the country to go bankrupt. creditors against stockton's chapter nine defensive plan says stockton has not done enough to cut spending. cypress worked out a last minute dayout deal with international leaders. there was already a rush to draw money from laiki.

this morning grief counselors will be at his school. hundreds attended that memorial service to honor the life of marcus johnson. the eighth grader and another bystander were killed when a race car driven by marcus' cousin lost control. yesterday they remembered him as a model student and player. >> goodbye for now. goodbye for now marcus. and until we meet again, i hope

you're always the lead car and hitting all your jump shots. >> today is the first day back from spring break where johnson was an eighth grader. grief counselors there be there on campus today and a special assembly has been planned in his honor. time now 4:52. a new memorial has been made for those killed in that san bruno pipeline explosion. the community worked together for months to create the wall which is made out of sir rammic tile. it honors the eight people killed in the 2010 explosion including three members of the church. 38 homes were destroyed. two sacramento men are facing charges on forcing two women into prostitution. 23-year-old glen harris brought the women to santa rosa and martin is accused of helping

him do that. they organized a sting operation using information. one of the women posted on the internet. a popular san francisco nightclub will remained shut down at least until tomorrow night after a weekend shooting. it happened early saturday morning at the 330 rich nightclub. three men were shot following a heated argument inside the club. one victim was listed in critical condition but has been updated to stable. the other two victims suffered minor injuries. investigators are trying to figure out how a man's body ended up in the water in richmond. the body was discovered in the water near cutting boulevard yesterday afternoon. investigators don't believe his death is suspicious. deputies are sending a warning to people after a rise in door knock robberies. the sheriffs office says the thieves will knock on a door if

someone answers they will ask for directions or a random name. if no one answers they will break in. today lawyers for dr. conrad murray are expected to file an appeal to his involuntary manslaughter conviction. lawyers argue that prosecutors did not prove jackson was hooked up to an iv drip system for the drug that killed him. jackson administered the fatal dosage himself. he died in 2009 after overdosing. dr. murray is currently serving four years in prison. coming up on the 5:00 hour. let's go to sal. he is looking at traffic. you are still looking at oakland. >> that is right it's still an injury crash. so watch for it there. it's not on the freeway. it's off the freeway but that is a pretty busy area if you can avoid it probably pretty good for you to do that. right now traffic on the freeway 880 and 580 in the area looking pretty good. you are look at interstate 880 here and the live picture near

[ laughter ] i had to take their word for it. i didn't see much of it. today 50s and 60s and low 70s. here is sal. right now we are looking at 880 as you drive through the traffic does look good as you get up to the downtown oakland area. also we are looking at westbound bay bridge. that traffic is moving along very nicely at the toll plaza. it's 5:00 let's go back to the desk. over night news a car involved in a high speed chase through alameda county might be connected to a shooting in hayward. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty joins us from hayward with more on this possible connection. tara. >> reporter: this is where police say that an innocent bystander could have been killed in a drive by shooting. right now police are looking at surveillance video from that gas station to see if it provides more clues. authorities believe the suspect involved in this shooting is who led them on a child chase just hours later. our cameras caught the high

speed chase north on 880 through oakland late last night. police tried to pull the driver over in hayward just after 11:00 for a dui in reckless driving. the car ended up spinning out of control. police cars smashed into it to box the driver in and arrest him. officers say people in the car were throwing things out on to the roadway. they never found thosements but officers did find weapons inside the vehicle when they finally stopped. >> they pursued the vehicle all the way into oakland where it crashed on its own. the three occupants were taken to custody from there. >> reporter: police believe those three could be tied to a shooting in hayward early yesterday afternoon. a man was driving with his wife and child when he was struck by a bullet. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. it may also be linked to another crime. this time in the south bay.
